(mypanhandle.com) – On January 1st, Walton County firefighter and EMT, Robert Justice, was on his way to his part-time job with Holmes County EMS. His roommate, a deputy with Holmes County, was in front of him.
“He pulled over to the side of the road and I thought something was up so I pulled over behind him,” said Robert Justice.
The pair was then met by a woman and her two young children, who tells them her husband was still inside their home, which was on fire.
“There was a life in danger and I just acted,” said Justice.
Since Justice’s roommate is a volunteer firefighter, there was gear in his patrol car. Without hesitating, Justice threw it on, and headed into the home, without a hose line or any back up.
“The bedroom was the only thing not on fire at the time and when I entered the window I had zero visibility,” said Justice.
Within minutes, he found the man, who was unconscious, and lied him on a nearby bed.
“I figured I can slide him, slide the bed over, and right out the window and that’s exactly what I did.”
Holmes county deputies then grabbed the man from the outside, before Justice went back in and rescued the family dog.
“In that moment, it was just me, and it was kind of scary,” said Justice. “I had to calm down a little bit. I had to focus on what I had to do.”
