(CW 33) – GARLAND — Dallas County Deputy Constable Bryan Woodard sees a lot of folks who have fallen on hard times.
“Being out here in reality, going house to house every single day, we see it a lot,” Deputy Woodard told NewsFix.
So, when it came time for him to serve an eviction notice to a couple living in a hotel, something caught him off guard.
“When I served the defendant, I kind of peeked in and I saw they had two toddler children and one infant child laying on the bed,” Woodard said.
“He was like, ‘What do y’all need? Do y’all have somewhere to go?’ I was like, ‘I’m going to be honest, as embarrassing as it is for me to say, we don’t have no where to go,’” Erica Peters explained.
“Once I put them out, then they’re just going to be out in the cold, and I don’t want to put anybody out in the cold, even though that is my job when people file, but we still have a heart,” said Officer Woodard
What Woodard did have the heart to do was to find another place for the family to stay, and he wants to help them find something long term.
“Man it means a lot. It really does,” Kilargo Reddic said while fighting back tears.
Deputy Woodard also took the whole family to get diapers and, of course, Christmas gifts.
“That’s why I’m tearing up now, because that’s the biggest issue. It’s hard to mask that hurt from my kids,” said Reddic.
“We just have to learn to help each other,” Deputy Woodard said. “And just not look down upon everybody else.”
So for this family, Santa was wearing a badge and keeping his promise to serve and protect.
