(South Brunswick Patch) – A South Brunswick police officer rescued a small dog whose owners were not home when a fire broke out at their apartment Saturday afternoon at the Royal Oaks/East Garden complex.

The fire broke out at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the South Brunswick Township apartment complex. Two connected apartment units were on fire, and none of the residents were home at the time, according to NJ.com. The smoke was so heavy that police and firefighters could not even get through the front door, so they went around back. That’s when Officer Brian Luck noticed a small dog sitting at the rear sliding glass door of the empty apartment, staring out.

He got inside the home, let the dog out to safety and stayed with it until his owners came home. The residents of both apartments were unable to return to to their homes, as they were heavily damaged by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. That’s Officer Luck and the dog he saved.
