(KFVS) –A Cape Girardeau police officer in the right place at the right time helped a little boy.

According to the department, Officer Peters was blocking traffic at the corner of Sprigg and Morgan Oak because of a fire.

Officer Peters noticed a little boy riding a bike across Morgan Oak.

A pickup truck rounded the corner and the 7-year-old tried to use his feet to stop the bike, but ended up laying the bike down to avoid being hit by the truck.

So, Officer Peters went to talk with the boy who identified himself as Shont-tez Bell. He told the officer that he had to lay his bike down because it didn’t have brakes.

Shont-tez asked Officer Peters for a band aid, so the pair went to the ambulance that was a couple of blocks away to get Shont-tez fixed up.

Officer Peters learned that Shont-tez lived in the apartment that was on fire.

So, on Wednesday, Officer Peters took Shont-tez to Walmart. Renee Fischer with Cape Girardeau Walmart helped the pair get Shont-tez a new bike. That bike has working brakes.
