COVINGTON, La (KNOE 8 News) – The heroic efforts and quick thinking from an officer, saved the lives of a Louisiana State Trooper and hisfamily. The police officer, who saw that his neighbors house was on fire, is now called a hero.
Saint Tammany Fire Crews said that the fire started around 5:30 Sunday morning in an exterior storage room that connected to the home of the State Trooper Paul Strickland. His neighbor, Covington Police Officer Darren Powell woke up to the noise and smoke and quickly ran next door to wake the sleeping family; helping them to safety all while his wife call 911.
Powell said in a statement, “I said your house is on fire, you need to get out, so we came around, and we were trying to– I grabbed the hose, we were trying to put it out underneath the garage, and within five minutes, it took off.”
The family and their pets were able to make it out safely. The men were able to control the fire with a garden hose until fire rescue arrived.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
