(WGXA) – A Georgia firefighter with strong ties to Baldwin County is now fighting to recover after an accident in Walton County on Friday.

John Richardson’s fellow firefighters are helping him and his family overcome this situation as he remains in serious condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

“We’re family. It’s the same as if you had a blood brother. These guys are blood brothers to me. We go to different calls to help other people. Now it’s one of our own that needs to be helped,” Devin Morris said.

Richardson was in a firetruck heading to a structure fire in Social Circle when the truck missed a turn, over-corrected and flipped several times.

“We are raising money for the family to help them with any food or anything they need while they’re here to visit,” Chief Steven Somers said. “When he worked for us full-time and as a volunteer he’s really dedicated to his job.”

Richardson works part-time with the Baldwin Fire Rescue and full-time in Social Circle. Now that he’s in serious condition, it’s no coincidence who are the first to respond.

“Just really hate that this happened to him. We hate this for him and his family. We really hate him leaving when he had to go to Social Circle but really a nice guy and we just hate that this happened to him and we’re really praying for him and his family,” Kenny Weldon said. “All throughout the state of Georgia we all try to stick together as firefighters. This is one of our brothers and we’re trying to work with his family and he still lives in Baldwin County, he’s still a resident in Baldwin, so we look to him as being family here also.”
