(onlineathens.com) – The Georgia State Firefighters Association has recently recognized Athens-Clarke County Department Lt. Jacob Jones for being selected as a recipient of the 2017 Life Saving Valor Award.
On Feb. 11, fire units dispatched to a laundry room fire.
First on the scene, Jones was informed the fire was in the rear of the structure and proceeded to radio all units of its location. Jones was able to convince the motel owner-manager to return to safety and to give him the master key to check all rooms.
Motel occupants directed him to where someone was missing, and Jones found a semi-conscious man.
With heavy smoke conditions and no hose line protection, Jones carried the man outside the room where other firefighters took over.
He returned to searching all rooms diligently and is documented by his fellow firefighters and the motel residents for his bravery in the situation. Although the man he found did not ultimately survive, Jones was able to at least give him a fighting chance.
