(WFLA) – A local firefighter is being called a hero for saving a seven-year old boy from drowning.
day at the beach quickly turned dangerous for Khara Green and her son Austin, who live in Texas.
They were looking for shells in the water where the bay meets the ocean when the current started to carry them out to sea.
“I kept trying to go further out to him and pull him back in. I was telling him to kick and swim,” Khara Green told News Channel 8 she tried to save her son, but the current proved to be too strong.
“I could see him going under and getting pulled out further to the sea. The current was just so strong. I just did not have enough upper body strength.”
Haines City Firefighter/EMT Brenn Hines was spending a day at the beaches of Anna Maria Island when he heard Green calling for help.
“I heard ‘help! Help!’” he said.
Brenn quickly swam to the pair, threw the child on his back and brought the mother and child both back safely to shore.
“It was in water above our head,” Brenn said. “The current, everything, the waves, swimming against everything, it was just not easy at all.”
Once they made is safely back to shore, Green thanked him for his bravery.
“Thank you doesn’t seem like enough,” she said.
