(WSB-TV) – Firefighters and investigators handed out money today- a reward to a citizen who helped solve a case. Investigators say a quick call to 911 helped find the pair who set a fire in Austell.

The fire gutted the Austell duplex, with the owner in line for a hefty insurance check.

Cobb County investigators pinned the fire on Samantha and Amanda Willard, thanks in large part because of information provided by the man who called 911.  For that, J.P. Malvo received a $2,500 reward check from Georgia Arson Control.

Malvo told investigators he saw the pair leave the house shortly before the fire.  The Willards claimed they were out state.  Eventually, they pleaded out- Samantha Williard serving a 5-year prison term, and her ex-wife Amanda received 20 years probation.

“One of the only times we’re able to solve arson and carry it all the way to prosecution is when somebody like Mr. Malvo steps forward,” commented Georgia Arson Contro Board member Jim Beck.
