(WSB-TV) – A sanitation worker who lost his legs when a distracted driver hit his truck is defying the odds and walking again.
Channel 2 Action News was there when Horace Walker thanked the Cobb County firefighters and emergency medical technicians who saved his life.
Walker was working on a sanitation truck on Austell Road in 2015 when a distracted driver rammed it.
He spent weeks in a coma and had both legs amputated above his knees.
His family wasn’t sure if he’d survive, but he did.
Walker spent months in rehab at the Shepherd Center. He is now walking and wanted to let first responders know that what they did that day made a life-long difference to him and his family.
“They were there to save my life, now I’m here to spend my life with my family thanks to these guys,” Walker said.
Firefighters said Walker’s journey makes their jobs worth it.
“To have someone come back, especially from a significant incident, just to thank us and see the progress that person has made, that’s the ultimate reward. It’s not the paychecks that we receive. That’s the ultimate reward to see something like that,” Cobb County Fire Lt. Ben Holley said.
