(Fox 25 Boston) – An outing on the Blackstone River turns into an agonizing, and chilly for a man and woman who fell in Sunday.

“A tree had fallen into the river and they were clinging on to the tree,” said Dan Desmarais with the Millville Fire Department.

All around them, the rain-swollen river swirled, but fortunately the had life vests on and that assisted them in staying afloat. The woman also happened to have a cell phone that did not get wet.

Although they weren’t far from shore, the current was strong and the underwater debris was slippery. Fire crews from surrounding towns responded, but it was Millville

Firefighter Jake Petrowicz who pulled the couple to safety.

“Fast moving water. It doesn’t look like it really is… Obviously, they weren’t entirely prepared for that,” he said.
