(AJC) – An off-duty Fairburn police officer was just doing his job, he says.
But after Det. Charles Israel took action last week outside a Food Depot, a witness wanted to commend him to his supervisors, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Israel was standing guard outside the store as part of a rotating duty when he saw a 3-year-old boy oblivious to his surroundings in the parking lot.
“I could tell he’s not paying attention,” Israel told Channel 2. “He’s just like — walking backwards.”
The store’s surveillance camera caught Israel run into the lot when a truck backed up near the boy. The detective grabbed the boy and pulled him out of the way, then returned to his post.
