GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A Gainesville police officer saved a man’s life at the Continuum Apartments in Gainesville Thursday night.

Officers responded to Juan Jose San Juan, 66, after his wife called 911 saying he was unconscious and not breathing.

Upon Smoak’s arrival, San Juan’s wife was crying hysterically and unable to attempt CPR based on her emotional state.

Smoak began performing CPR on San Juan, who had a weak pulse, until Emergency Services arrived to the scene.

San Juan was brought to UF Shands where he was resuscitated and able to breathe on his own.

The Emergency Room Physician said the CPR Smoak performed at the scene saved San Juan’s life.

Doctors said San Juan has a long medical history, including strokes, and there was no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

GPD said Smoak did a great job for her quick action that helped save a life.
