A 22-year-old rookie police officer – on patrol alone for the very first time Wednesday – had a day he won’t forget anytime soon.
Roseville police say Officer Tom Hicke rescued two senior citizens, trapped in their flooded car that was quickly taking on water.
“You never know what’s going to happen,” Hicke told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS a couple of hours after the rescue.
It all happened on Fairview Avenue, right below Minnesota Highway 36. That’s an area that floods frequently when it rains, and Hicke said the water was up above his waist at the time.
“They still had their seatbelts on. They both looked panicked,” Hicke said of the couple.
He waded in, made the save, and police say the couple is doing fine.
“The male actually got out of the vehicle and tried to start pushing his car,” Hicke laughed. “I had to tell him we had to get out of there.”
Given his eventful first day on the job, we asked Hicke what he has planned for day two. His response?
“I don’t know. It’s going to be hard to top it.”
