(Independent Mail) – Michael Ryan, a volunteer firefighter with the Whitefield Fire Station in Anderson County, saved a woman from her burning house Thursday evening.
Ryan found the woman, whose name authorities did not have Wednesday, hiding in her bedroom closet, away from the flames that were between her and the door through which she could have gotten out of the room. She and her husband, Danny Owen, live at a ranch house at Stringer Road and Pineland Meadows.
Medshore Ambulance Service rushed the woman to the AnMed Health Medical Center, where she was expected to recover, said Whitefield Fire Station Capt. Adam Garrison.
“Michael lives down the street (from where the fire was),” Garrison said. “As he was passing the house, to go to Anderson, he saw the smoke coming from it. He stopped to help.”
The fire started in the bedroom, on the floor near a sewing table, Garrison said. He said an investigator is looking into what caused the blaze.
“The fire damage was very minimal,” Garrison said.
The woman’s husband, Danny Owen, was outside working in his shop when the fire started, Garrison said. He tried to break a window to get in, but the smoke overwhelmed him.
Firefighters with Hopewell Fire Station assisted in putting out the blaze, Garrison said.
