(WHDH) – A firefighter risked his life to save a mother and her baby from a fire in Weymouth.

Tuesday morning, firefighter Gary Walsh got a call for an apartment building fire, not knowing what the veteran firefighter and his ladder company were going into.

“We were getting conflicting reports on people trapped,” he said. “We heard a woman say, ‘Help me, help me.'”

Walsh and his fellow firefighters made their way from floor to floor.

They heard a voice calling for help, but couldn’t find it.

“I felt her arm or her shoulder and I realized she had her baby in her arm, I pulled the mask off I put it in front of her face to have some sort of air to breathe and at that point it’s get her out of the building as fast as possible,” Walsh said.

Walsh led the woman and her baby to safety minutes after finding them.

The department put out the fire and got everyone out of the home safely.

Walsh said he just did what he was trained to do.

“We’re not heroes, we signed up to do this job we do it because we love it, we want to be that person when someone calls for help we’re there to be there and actually help them,” he said.
