PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) – A landscaper who got stuck in a palm tree was rescued Saturday morning by an off-duty Phoenix firefighter.

Capt. Joey Gonzales saw the man in distress and jumped into action, said  Capt. Aaron Ernsberger of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Gonzales was a couple of houses down and scaled a few walls to reach the scene.

The tree trimmer was trapped after fronds sloughed off the tree and the weight of the branches began suffocating him.

“Capt. Joey Gonzales ran to his aid,” Ernsberger said. “He had no safety equipment but that’s what these firefighters do. He rendered aid, got him out, he saved his life is what he did.”

He helped get the man safely down.

“These tree trimmers have a dangerous job,” Ernsberger said. “We’re happy the tree trimmer is alive.”

The landscaper was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
