(FIRST COAST NEWS) – Authorities say a Flagler County Sheriff’s deputy rescued a woman trapped inside an overturned car for nearly an hour as it filled with water early Thursday.

Brandy Demarco, 21, was driving west along County Road 80 in Bunnell before 1 a.m. when she swerved to avoid a deer and her Toyota pickup plunged into a roadside ditch, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

She was stuck inside the vehicle for 45 minutes as water filled the cab before help arrived. By the time Deputy Aaron Beausoleil got to the scene, Demarco had managed to cut off her seat belt but she was still unable to get free.

The deputy could not see anyone inside the vehicle, but said he could hear Demarco yelling. “I told her I was going to use my baton to smash the window,” Beausoleil said. “The water level wasn’t that high. But there was water coming inside the cab.”

Beausoleil and another deputy pulled Demarco from the wreckage. She suffered bruises, but refused treatment at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff James Manfre praised Beausoleil’s actions. “He did exactly what he’s trained to do, and we had a good outcome from a bad situation.”
