(13 WHOtv.com<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0An off-duty Petersburg firefighter\u00a0jumped into action <\/a>\u00a0Friday night after a fire broke out at the home of his elderly neighbor along South Crater Road in Prince George County.<\/p>\n

Chris Lawrence said he had checked on his next-door neighbor earlier in the night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI helped him get in the bed and get him in the house,\u201d Lawrence told WTVR. \u201cI told him I\u2019d come back around\u2026 and check on him to make sure he was still sleep or still in bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Lawrence said when he came outside 30 minutes later, he saw something concerning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took a few steps towards the house and that\u2019s when I noticed the plastic blinds had fallen inside the kitchen \u2014 and the kitchen was on fire at that point,\u201d Lawrence said.<\/p>\n

Lawrence rushed into the home \u2013 without any fire gear \u2013 to rescue his neighbor, who he said is in his 90s.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt never crossed my mind not to go in, maybe it should of, but it didn\u2019t. I knew he was in there,\u201d he said. \u201cI do remember it was a ton of smoke, it was hot, but we were down as low as I could go, we came down the porch and went to the front yard.\u201d<\/p>\n
