(FOX 9<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0Crews in Duluth are being credited with saving 35 fishermen Saturday morning after they were stranded on\u00a0ice<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

According to Duluth Police, the fishermen were stranded on ice on Bay Side of Park Point after\u00a0strong<\/span><\/span>winds created a crack in the ice.<\/p>\n

Using a ladder, three Rapid Deployment Craft and a boat from the area between the Duluth Rowing Club and the Duluth Airport, the fishermen were rescued. One fisherman entered the\u00a0water<\/span><\/span>, but made it ashore on his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were anticipating 4-5 inches of ice and that was true,\u201d said Rory Strange, a Park Point resident. \u201cWhat they didn\u2019t factor in was the\u00a0wind<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that was coming off the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strange also noted that locals in the area knew the winds would be a factor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can happen so fast and people that have lived down here for years kind of expected it,\u201d he said. Once they heard what was going to be happening with the wind, they really expected it and I think that\u2019s why the response was so quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was probably 200 feet of ice and then there was a 50-foot crack and then they were out on the ice beyond that,\u201d said Acting Asst. Chief Mark Herman of the Duluth Fire Department.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
