JFRD\u00a0engineers Patrick Schneider and Justin Smith both played important roles in rescuing two men\u00a0dangling on the side of the BB&T Bank Building in downtown Jacksonville early Monday evening.<\/p>\n

Schneider told News4Jax\u00a0that it was the first time he ever responded to a call like the one that came in about 5 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just grabbed as much gear as I could \u2014 rope, rigging, bags \u2014 (and) headed to the roof,\u201d Schneider said. \u201cThey looked like two ants hanging there. All you saw was their boots dangling. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve never seen before. A million emotions are running over you. And that\u2019s what we do \u2014 we fall back on our training to suppress that and just do your job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schneider\u2019s job was to secure the scaffolding, which was hanging precariously\u00a0from one end, to the building so it wouldn\u2019t fall to the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like heights,\u201d he said. \u201cI did what I needed to do but I was like dragging knuckles going down the side of the building.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every call, Schneider said, requires an incredible amount of trust that he and his teammates all have each other\u2019s safety in mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were manually holding those lines,\u201d he said. \u201cThose guys were hanging over a building, held by those buddies they work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
