{"id":15234,"date":"2017-07-05T19:59:44","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T19:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=15234"},"modified":"2017-07-05T19:59:44","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T19:59:44","slug":"brave-fdny-firefighter-descends-200-foot-elevator-shaft-to-rescue-four-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=15234","title":{"rendered":"Brave FDNY firefighter descends 200-foot elevator shaft to rescue four men"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/brooklyn\/firefighter-rescues-men-trapped-ed-plant-elevator-article-1.3303449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NY Daily News<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0A firefighter was lowered down a 200-foot elevator shaft Wednesday \u2014 six times the distance of any practice run \u2014 to help rescue four men trapped in an elevator at a Brooklyn Con Edison plant.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighter James Dowdell, 32, was lowered to the top of the elevator inside the Hudson Ave. building in Vinegar Hill about 7:40 a.m. after the elevator stopped 200 feet below street level.<\/p>\n<p>The elevator carrying a Con Edison employee and three contractors was stuck between floors, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of Squad 1 tried to access the bottom of (the elevator) but it wasn\u2019t easily accessible,\u201d said Dowdell, an 11-year veteran of the FDNY. \u201cWe talked about it and realized that the best way to do this was send a member down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dowdell, of Rescue 2, was given the task.
