{"id":15147,"date":"2017-05-19T13:05:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T13:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=15147"},"modified":"2017-05-19T13:06:14","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T13:06:14","slug":"firefighters-report-progress-against-ga-wildfire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=15147","title":{"rendered":"Firefighters Report Progress Against GA Wildfire"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firehouse.com\/news\/12335831\/ga-firefighters-report-progress-against-west-mims-fire-in-okefenokee-firefighter-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIREHOUSE<\/a>) \u2013 Firefighters have made progress against the fire in the Okefenokee Swamp, which has not seen significant growth in several days, a firefighter said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The West Mims Fire, first reported April 6, has remained at about 152,000 acres of scorched land for \u201ca couple of days now,\u201d said John Nicholls, public information officer for the fire\u2019s command post.<\/p>\n<p>A storm last weekend which dumped as much as two inches of rain on parts of the fire slowed the blaze\u2019s spread, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rain quieted the fire down quite a bit,\u201d he said, \u201cletting us get our firefighters in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Almost 1,000 firefighters are tackling the flames, aided by 11 helicopters, four air tankers, 117 fire engines and more heavy equipment, according to a statement from the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n<p>No heavy rain is in the area\u2019s immediate future, Nicholls said.
