(GreenwichTime<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0An off-duty Greenwich firefighter has earned praise for saving the life of a stricken boy in Port Chester, N.Y., who had stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

According to the account by Port Chester police, Godiski was driving his car when he saw a commotion on Willet Avenue and North Main Street.<\/p>\n

There he observed a crowd gathering around a gray Mazda. \u201cFirefighter Gordiski noticed someone in the crowd was attending to an unconscious child,\u201d the police chief wrote.<\/p>\n

Godicki sprinted from his car, across Main Street traffic, to the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere he encountered a chaotic situation, a four-year-old male playing with the vehicle sunroof had gotten his neck caught in the roof causing him to lose conscious and go into respiratory and cardiac arrest,\u201d Conway wrote.<\/p>\n

The off-duty firefighter began chest compressions and other CPR techniques until Port Chester paramedics arrived. The young boy survived. The chief said Gordiski deserved recognition for \u201cfor his courage, professionalism, and willingness to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe really deserves credit. He was calm, cool and collected, and he took charge of the scene,\u201d said Kick. Physicians and paramedics credited the fast action with saving the boy\u2019s life, according to accounts that Greenwich firefighters later received.<\/p>\n
