Suddenly, someone ran up to him, telling him that one of the contestant\u2019s father was having a heart attack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Being a trained emergency medical technician, the firefighter did what he does best \u2013 ran to help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u201cApparently, he was feeling bad and had taken a couple of Nitro pills,\u201d said Mansell, a 17-year-veteran with the Russellville Fire Department. \u201cWhen I got to him, he was sitting in a chair and was breathing heavy. I started trying to get him to slow down his breathing. I knew he was in the middle of having a heart attack, so I called 911 for a helicopter.\u201d<\/div>\n

Mansell, who was at the tournament with his son, saw the man, Phil Powell, start turning blue in the face, and \u201che just went out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI checked his pulse, he didn\u2019t have one. I pulled him out of the chair and started doing chest compressions on him,\u201d Mansell said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While he was working on Powell, a doctor who was in the park, came over to help as Mansell continued the chest compression until park rangers arrived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With still no pulse, the rangers used an automated external defibrillator and \u201cshocked him once, and he came back,\u201d Mansell said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said shortly afterward, paramedics arrived along with an air ambulance. When they left, Powell was sitting up, talking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey flew him to Huntsville Hospital, and I went by there Saturday night,\u201d said Mansell. \u201cHe was sitting up in the (emergency room). I was glad he was doing so well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Powell, who is from Alabaster, was at the fishing tournament to watch his 14-year-old son, Tyler, compete.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was the first tournament we had been to,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said there is no doubt in his mind, if not for the quick action by Mansell he would not be living today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI died, my heart stopped. Shane kept my blood pumping,\u201d Powell said. \u201cI can\u2019t image doing what he did in that situation. He did what he was trained to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Powell had a heart attack over a year ago, but for the last few weeks he said he had been feeling physically \u201cgreat.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI had just set up a tent, had the grill going, and had hot dogs on,\u201d he said. \u201cThe last thing I remember before I died was telling a friend to get some help. I thank God he got Shane.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
