(ABC 6<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0Every day, first responders have to be ready to act on a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n

For 23 years, Dan Buelow has been answering the call with the Norwich Township Fire Department. On Saturday, he did it again.<\/p>\n

Buelow was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with his son for a volleyball tournament when his attention shifted to a coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw he was going down. I didn\u2019t think anything except to get over there and help.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first thing the off-duty firefighter did was try to find out the man\u2019s medical history. Then, he performed a sternal rub to test consciousness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe rub really hard on the chest. Sometimes it\u2019s very uncomfortable and so people will go \u2018ah.\u2019 They\u2019ll moan. They\u2019ll yell at you.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the man stopped breathing, Buelow went to the next step.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went ahead and found my landmarks and I just started CPR.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfamiliar with the environment, the veteran firefighter and EMT looked for an automated external defibrillator or AED, found it, and wasted no time putting it to use.<\/p>\n
