(ABC NEWS<\/a>) \u2013 Firefighters in northwestern Washington raced against the clock on Wednesday afternoon to save two teenage boys who fell through an icy lake.<\/p>\n

The teens, both 15, had apparently walked out to the middle of Lake Serene near Lynnwood, Washington, when the ice broke and the boys fell into the cold water, according to a news release<\/a> from Snohomish County Fire District 1.<\/p>\n

Someone immediately called 911 for help, and a rescue team responded to the scene \u201cwithin minutes,\u201d the fire department wrote in the release. The boys \u201cwere about 150 feet from the shore when firefighters arrived,\u201d the fire department added.<\/p>\n

It was \u201ccertainly a long way to be from shore,\u201d firefighter David Erickson told ABC affiliate KOMO<\/a> in Seattle.<\/p>\n

One of the teens managed to climb out of the water and make it back to shore safely, Erickson said.<\/p>\n

The other teen was not able to get out on his own, and he was in icy water for \u201cat least 30 minutes before he was rescued,\u201d according to the news release.<\/p>\n

That teen \u201chad some hypothermia and couldn\u2019t get out,\u201d Erickson told KOMO. \u201cHe needed assistance with even the simplest of tasks, from getting the life jacket on to getting on the rescue board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erickson added that it is \u201cvery difficult to survive out there in street clothes and boots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pamela Penning, an 84-year-old woman who lives in a home on the lake, witnessed the rescue and captured several photos.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you can\u2019t get very far and fast on ice and in freezing water, so it was painfully slow and agonizing to watch,\u201d Penning told ABC News today. She added that she was impressed by the rescue operation, \u201cwhich was so efficiently and carefully done.\u201d<\/p>\n
