{"id":14611,"date":"2016-11-14T19:28:20","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T19:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=14611"},"modified":"2016-11-14T19:28:20","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T19:28:20","slug":"cherokee-county-deputy-rescues-elderly-couple-from-burning-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgiaarsoncontrol.org\/?p=14611","title":{"rendered":"Cherokee County Deputy rescues elderly couple from burning home"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p class=\"BodycopyW\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneledgernews.com\/local_news\/top_stories\/deputy-rescues-elderly-couple-from-burning-home\/article_a72debbc-a6ad-11e6-989f-f78e894d5297.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cherokee County Tribune<\/a>) \u2013 It was just another late night shift for Cherokee County Sheriff\u2019s Office Deputy Brian Lonberg, but after receiving an alarm call Wednesday morning for a business along Cumming Highway in Canton, he noticed smoke coming from a nearby residence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">At 1:43 a.m. Lonberg quickly made a U-turn and approached the home located in the 7000 block of Cumming Highway thinking the smoke was coming from a bon-fire in the backyard of the residence, but he heard no music and saw no lights at the Canton home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">\u201cAs I pulled up to the side of the carport I noticed the back porch was pretty much fully engulfed in flames and so I got out, pretty much just started banging on their carport side door and was yelling at them,\u201d Lonberg told the Tribune Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_top\" class=\"tncms-region \">\u00a0Lonberg said the alarm call he received was unrelated to the fire, but the large amount of smoke he saw while responding to the initial call caught his attention.<\/div>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">The couple answered the door after Lonberg had been beating on the walls and yelling for anyone inside to vacate the residence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">\u201cThis elderly couple who opened the door were asleep with no idea what was going on,\u201d Lonberg said. \u201cI told them their house was on fire and they needed to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">As Lonberg vacated the residents from their home, he walked to the rear of the house and realized the flames had started to catch the exterior wall on fire, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">\u201cI stood by with the residents until (Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services) got there,\u201d Lonberg said. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty much exterior damage and the residents were able to go back into the house a few hours later.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_middle\" class=\"tncms-region \">\u00a0Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services personnel were able to extinguish the flames and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Cherokee Fire Investigator Cheri Collett.<\/div>\n<p class=\"BodycopyW\">\u201c(Lonberg\u2019s) diligence played a significant role in the occupant\u2019s safety and survival,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was a big deal\u2026it\u2019s horrible to have your house burn but even more painful to be displaced and living off the kindness of relatives.
