(Poughkeepsie Journal<\/a>) \u2013 He was off-duty, heading on vacation.<\/p>\n

But when City of Poughkeepsie Firefighter James Brugger and his wife Mindy, an Emergency Medical Technician and CPR instructor, saw a man lying unconscious on the floor of Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, they sprang into action.<\/p>\n

The Bruggers were getting ready to board a flight to Fort\u00a0<\/strong>Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday around 6:10 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were in the coffee shop and there was a lot of commotion,\u201d said James Brugger, a 20-year-veteran of the city department. \u201cI went out into the hallway and saw a gentleman laying on the ground\u201d near the terminal gates. \u201cI yelled for my wife \u2026 we went down there and the guy was unconscious, not breathing with no pulse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man, 65, had suffered a massive heart attack, according to state police spokesman\u00a0Steven Nevel.<\/p>\n

Luckily, there was a public-access\u00a0Automated External\u00a0Defibrillator\u00a0(AED) on the wall of the airport.<\/p>\n

Another firefighter from Jersey City was also there, James Brugger said. That firefighter \u201cgot the defibrillator,\u00a0brought it over \u2026 I grabbed the pads,\u00a0put it on\u201d and shocked the unconscious man.<\/p>\n

Another bystander was performing CPR, and \u201cmy wife was checking for responses,\u201d James Brugger said. After shocking him,\u00a0\u201cI checked for a pulse \u2026 he had a pulse (and) two minutes later, he was conscious again.\u201d<\/p>\n

State police and other local law enforcement showed up at the scene, along with the New Windsor Ambulance Corps, and\u00a0New York\u00a0Air National Guard\u2019s 105th\u00a0Airlift\u00a0Wing.<\/p>\n

The man was lucky, Nevel said. \u201cHe\u00a0happened to collapse right by an AED\u201d and trained medical staff who were able to administer CPR. \u201cFor something bad to happen, he had all the right stuff around.\u201d<\/p>\n
