SWEETWATER (WATE.com<\/a>) \u2013 He won\u2019t let you call him a hero. In fact, when you ask Tim Carpenter what happened at Sweetwater High School he says he was just doing his job.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just part of my job. I\u2019m here for that, to protect the kids, staff or anybody else that\u2019s inside that school,\u201d Carpenter said.<\/p>\n

Carpenter is referring to a lunchtime scare for freshman student\u00a0Christian Hamilton. He started choking during lunch in the school cafeteria and went to Carpenter \u2013 unable to breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristian came running up to me and said, \u2018I\u2019m choking. I can\u2019t breathe.\u2019 I thought for a minute maybe he was joking but then he said it again, \u2018I can\u2019t breathe,\u2019\u201d Carpenter said.<\/p>\n

At the time, Carpenter was working as a student resource officer with the Monroe County Sheriff\u2019s Department. The program allows SRO officers to take vacations or days off and when they do, Carpenter steps in as a substitute SRO during their absence. It\u2019s a program he suggested to Sheriff Tommy Jones over a year ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt great. I was like, \u2018Thank you, you saved my life.\u2019 He was like, \u2018That was good for you. Hopefully you don\u2019t do it again,\u2019\u201d Hamilton said.<\/p>\n

Carpenter has been in law enforcement for 32 years, served in Vietnam, and is a Purple Heart recipient. He and his wife Gail share six children, five grandchildren and three great grandsons.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
