(WSB-TV<\/a>) \u2013 HALL COUNTY, Ga. \u2014<\/strong>A Hall County sheriff\u2019s deputy risked his own life by going into a burning house three times to rescue those who were inside.<\/p>\n

Deputy Perry Cook told Channel 2\u2019s Berndt Peterson that he had the day off on June 8.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dogs were bugging me and wanting to go outside.\u00a0So, I brought them outside and I saw Miss Martha\u2019s house.\u00a0I saw behind it some smoke coming up.\u00a0I\u2019m, like, \u2018Please tell me Miss Martha isn\u2019t burning leaves,\u2019\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n

She wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

It was 80-year old Martha Coley\u2019s house on Thorn Bush Drive in Gainesville that was on fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, the door was cracked about 6 inches, so I pushed the door open,\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n

Inside, Cook found a 12-year-old foster child he says Coley cared for.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018You got to get out.\u2019 So, she meets me up here and I\u2019m, like, \u2018Where\u2019s Miss Martha?\u2019\u201d Cook asked.<\/p>\n

Cook went into the burning house a second time and found Martha Coley grabbing pictures off the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I get her out to her car.\u00a0And the whole time she\u2019s yelling, \u2018I got to get Lulu.\u2019\u00a0 And I\u2019m, like, \u2018Who is Lulu?\u2019\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n

The deputy went in a third time, and at the back door found Lulu, a golden retriever.<\/p>\n

He says each time he went in, the flames had spread.<\/p>\n

But he got all the inhabitants out safely just before firefighters arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just did it \u2014 a natural reaction.\u00a0Tell me somebody is in trouble, we got to help.\u00a0We got to go,\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n

Cook says Coley suffered a couple of broken bones in a fall outside the house. She\u2019s staying with relatives.<\/p>\n

He says the child and the dog are fine.<\/p>\n

The fire was likely caused by an electrical problem.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
