(ABC 10<\/a>)- PLANTATION, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Plantation volunteer Henry Bernard got a terrifying wake-up call just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n

His smoke detectors were going off, prompting him to jump out of bed to see what was going on.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour fight or flight (instinct) kicks in,\u201d Bernard said. \u201c(I had to) get everybody out of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

He saw heavy smoke under the stairwell and ran upstairs to wake up his young children.<\/p>\n

Once he got his family out safely, Bernard hoped that he could put \u00a0out the fire himself.<\/p>\n

He tried to use a \u00a0fire extinguisher, but\u00a0 the fire was too intense. The entire first floor of his home was engulfed in smoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it happens to you, it really wakes you up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bernard\u2019s family has three cats who also made it out safely, although one needed oxygen after it inhaled too much smoke.<\/p>\n

The pets are \u00a0OK, and so is the family.<\/p>\n

As a firefighter, Bernard made sure his home was fireproof, but he said this was a fire wthat he couldn\u2019t prevent. He said he is thankful \u00a0that his smoke detectors were working and alerted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmoke alarms, they work,\u201d he said. \u201c(When they go off) guess what, you\u2019re awake.\u201d<\/p>\n
