(11 Alive<\/a>) \u2013 Footage from a body camera captured a Griffin police sergeant\u2019s heroic rescue of a 3-year-old from a house fire.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Joe Hudson of the Griffin Police Department arrived at the scene of the blaze before the fire department and quickly assessed the situation. He spotted a grandmother exiting burning home and learned that her grandson was still in his room. That\u2019s when the 14-year veteran leapt into action \u2013 running into a fire for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was looking everywhere and couldn\u2019t find him,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cSmoke was starting to get to me, so I grabbed some clothes off her bed and put \u2019em to my face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, he persisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpened that door and he was laying there on the bed, and I immediately grabbed him and ran out,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n

The sergeant moved back into the smoky darkness and found a door to get out into the light.<\/p>\n

\u201cI immediately sat down on the ground and started catching my breath,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Then he met the child he saved.<\/p>\n

Despite the attention he\u2019s receiving from the rescue, Hudson said his actions were all part of the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did what I get paid to do,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m supposed to do what others might not, so that\u2019s what I did. I earned my paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waffle House donated the money for the Griffin Police Department\u2019s 60 body cameras after Officer Kevin Jordan was shot and killed at one of their restaurants. The department began using the cameras on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
