Amy Sanchez and her fianc\u00e9 Jim Grossman are like any parents, they love to gush about their son, Opus. The only difference is that Opus is a 10-year-old Husky.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s my life, he\u2019s my baby. He\u2019s spoiled, and since we don\u2019t have any children, he\u2019s like our son,\u201d Sanchez said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s also an escape artist,\u201d Grossman added.<\/p>\n

When Opus decided to go on an icy adventure Wednesday near their Orion Township home at midnight, the couple went in panic mode.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got in the car, we went on foot searching for him,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cBut Jim has an acute sense of direction and heard him whimpering on the lake behind our house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opus had walked across the majority of Elkhorn Lake near Thistle Valley Drive and Wild Flower Court before falling into the ice and getting stuck.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour first thought is to go in and get him, but he was far enough away that I knew I needed to call public safety. And I am glad we did,\u201d said Grossman.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where Capt. Eric Florence, Capt. Daniel White and firefighter Dave Crabtree of The Orion Township Fire Department come in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as we located the dog on the lake, Crabtree and White put on their cold water suits,\u201d Florence said.<\/p>\n

These pictures show how Captain White crawled across the ice, hooked up to a neon safety rope, and greeted a distraught pup.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was whimpering, he was crying,\u201d said Sanchez. \u201cThe firefighters said he wasn\u2019t in too much distress, but when I saw him half in the water and half out, I was really worried.\u201d<\/p>\n

But even without Opus\u2019 favorite treats, it didn\u2019t take much to get Opus to follow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just grabbed his collar and helped pull his hind legs out of the water and he came with me willingly,\u201d said White. \u201cI think he was happy to see anyone, even someone wearing a red suit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
