(FOX 59<\/a>) \u2013\u00a0A Lawrence police officer is being credited for saving a 14-year-old boy\u2019s life after he fell into a semi-frozen pond chasing a softball.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a child of my own,\u201d Lawrence Police Officer Dustin VanTreese said. \u201cAnd immediately, I mean absolutely immediately, I was envisioning my child that was out here in the water, and I just came here as fast as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n

VanTreese was the first person to the scene at the Parkwood Mobile Home Community in Lawrence Saturday just after 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see the kid\u2019s head above water,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd\u00a0I was going into the water before I even knew what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

VanTreese\u00a0took off some of his gear and then rushed into the pond.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a parent, I know I would want to keep my child as safe as possible, get them to safety as fast as possible, and that\u2019s what I did,\u201d VanTreese said.\u00a0\u201cLuckily by the grace of God I was just in the right place at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence Police Department Captain\u00a0Gary Woodruff said this case should serve as a warning\u00a0to everyone about the dangers of walking on ice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a good reminder for everyone about the dangers of going out on a pond that seems safe,\u201d Woodruff said. \u201cIt\u2019s not worth your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said there are always better options than walking out onto a lake or a pond.\u00a0\u201cStanding on the shore and throwing something in to retrieve an item that\u2019s floating on top of the water is a much safer way to retrieve something as opposed to going into the pond,\u201d Woodruff said.<\/p>\n

The 14-year-old\u00a0boy is safe and back at home after a brief stint at Riley Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
