Rewards Offered in Northeast Georgia Arson Cases

State fire investigators are asking for the public’s help identifying suspects in two recent arson cases in Northeast Georgia. Rewards of up to $10,000 are being offered.

On June 12, a vacant residence was burned near US Highway 129 North in Jackson County.

“At the time of the fire, the residence had been abandoned for several years and was not connected to any utilities,” says State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John King. “The structure was inaccessible to responding fire officials and was burned to completion as a result.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working with the Jefferson police and fire departments on the investigation.

State investigators are also working with local officials in Madison County to identify who’s responsible for a house fire on June 13 in Colbert.

The early morning blaze broke out inside a mobile home on Highway 72 West. Officials say the residence received heavy fire damage, and many belongings were lost.

No injuries were reported. The residents were not home when the fire began.

Anyone with information on either case should call the Georgia Arson Control Hotline at 1-800-252-5804. Rewards are available for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Lanier Fire Ruled Arson

REWARD OFFERED

(laniercountynewsonline.com) Last week, the Lanier County News (LCN) published the fact that the Georgia Arson Control (GAC) is asking for the public’s help.  They believe that there is someone, not yet identified, that is responsible for arson in Ray City.  The GAC believes that a home located on Ray City’s Main Street at the corner of Pauline Street is the site of an arson-related fire.  The GAC requests assistance in discovering the suspect responsible for the fire.

A “Reward up to $10,000” has been posted at the burned out home.  The GAC states that it wants information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for arson and/or fraud.

An open records request to the Ray City government was made and a report was provided to the LCN.  The report indicates that the Ray City Fire Department (RCFD) responded on Friday, October 21 at about 11:32 a.m. (believed but not listed as a.m.) that the RCFD arrived about 11:38 and was able to get the fire under control.  The record indicates that the RCFD was dismissed at 12:09 p.m.

The fire occurred at a home structure in a single room with contents at 8192 Main St., Ray City.  The Berrien County Tax Assessor’s Office lists the address as simply Main Street, although the listed owner is a Clara Miller, 8204 Main Street.  The RCFD record owner is identified as Heather Rivers, who may have been a tenant.  Later in the report, RCFD’s record shows the address as 804 Main Street.  For basic purposes of reader’s understanding, it is an older home located at Main Street and Pauline Avenue on the southeast corner of the intersection.

It is the understanding of the LCN that the reason arson is believed to be the cause of the fire, is that one of the home’s doors was broken into.

The RCFD report indicates that the fire originated on a dining room table.  One of the homes neighbors made the e-911 call indentifying that they could see smoke coming from the home.  No one was at home at the time of the fire.  The fire was said to be contained in the dining room to a small kitchen table with a pile of clothes on it.

The Georgia Arson Control (GAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting arson in Georgia and celebrating the efforts of Georgia’s first responders.

Anyone with information is asked to call the GAC Hotline at 1-800-282-5804.

Buckhead Fires Ruled Arson

REWARD OFFERED

(FOX 5) – In just a matter of weeks, three retail stores in Atlanta went up in flames. Fire investigators say they are now treating all three as arson cases.

“The initial appearance is they appear to be covering up some sort of theft or shoplifting,” said William Perdue, an ATF Senior Special Agent Certified Fire Investigator.

The first fire happened last month at a Walmart on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd. Days later another Walmart, this time on Howell Mill Road burned. Then this week, there was a fire in the Target on Piedmont Road in Buckhead.

Atlanta Fire says it is investigating all three as cases of arson.

Perdue is an ATF Fire investigator. He is working with local and state officials to get answers.

“There were plenty of customers and multiple employees in all three locations, they all occurred during business hours,” he said. “So that’s a pretty egregious offense, and it is a danger to our community that ATF takes very seriously.”

Atlanta Fire released pictures of two persons of interest in connection with the arsons.

“The information that we could get from somebody that recognizes these individuals or individual may help us understand better whether they are isolated incidents that have occurred in close proximity or whether they are linked,” Perdue said.

Investigators say the fires caused millions of dollars in damage.

Walmart has already announced one of the affected stores will not reopen while the other will be turned into a small-format grocery store.

“We take this very seriously, and we are going to make sure that when a suspect or suspects are identified and that person or persons are going to be held accountable for this,” Perdue said.

If you know anything you are asked to call the Arson Control Hotline at 1-800-282-5804. You could be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000 if it leads to an arrest or conviction.
